Can Samsung outpace TSMC in the 2nm era?
sammyfans.com, Dec. 31, 2024 –
Samsung having much trouble with its 3nm process technology. Meanwhile, the 2nm process could be a turning point for Samsung Foundry as TSMC continues to raise production costs and OEMs looking for an alternative.
Korea's Chosun reports that Samsung is looking to tap deals with consumers for its 2nm process to narrow the gap with TSMC. The company's brief downfall led TSMC to grow rapidly and widen the gap in the global semiconductor market.
Samsung and TSMC would start mass production of the 2nm process in the second half of the next year. The new cutting-edge 2nm process node differed a lot from the existing 3nm process technology.
The Foundry Division is working to expand its chip production ecosystem to better rival TSMC. The company is partnering with design houses and attracting allies in areas such as electronic design automation (EDA), testing, and IP.
The battle isn't one-sided and the opponent isn't that weak to surrender. Taiwan's TSMC reported to have achieved a 60% yield in recent 2nm pilot production. The company also plans to introduce the 2nm process at its Arizona plant.
Samsung scored two 2nm orders
It is reported that Samsung's 2nm process has achieved higher-than-expected initial yields. The company's 2nm foundry process is currently undergoing mass production testing.
Samsung is also said to have secured orders for 2nm-based AI accelerators from Japan's Preferred Networks and a Korean NPU manufacturer to produce its next-generation NPU.
